Autism and ADHD are different conditions which affect people in different ways. However, there are some symptoms of these conditions which overlap, which can make it challenging to decide which assessment is best suited to your child’s needs. In addition, research suggests that if a child has one of these conditions (autism or ADHD), it may be more likely they will also have the other.
A combined assessment will assess for both conditions by integrating the individual diagnostic assessment pathways. Your clinician can discuss whether a combined assessment may be helpful for your child during your initial assessment and answer any questions about this.
Children with autism will typically experience difficulty with communication and interaction with others, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behaviours. ADHD is a developmental disorder associated with heightened levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Please see individual assessment pages or information sheets for further details about these conditions.
A questionnaire pack requesting information about your developmental, educational and health history. This will also include a section for an informant (someone who knows you well) to complete.
An in-depth video call interview informed by the highly validated Autism Diagnostic Interview- Revised (ADI-R) is completed with parents/carers. This considers your child’s challenges across settings and with detailed individualised examples.
An in-depth video call interview informed by the highly validated ADHD child examination (ACE) is completed with parents/carers. This considers your child’s challenges across settings and with detailed individualised examples.
A questionnaire pack sent to a member of school staff who knows your child well. Information will be collected about your child’s presentation and challenges in this setting, as well as their academic abilities and social relationships.
A semi-structured and standardised assessment of communication, social skills, and restricted and repetitive behaviours. This is completed with your child in-clinic.
A clinic-based computerised assessment programme providing data around core ADHD symptoms (inattention, activity and impulsivity) when compared to children of the same age and sex.
A video call session to share assessment findings and any recommendations made for ongoing input/support. A comprehensive assessment report is then written and shared with you summarising the above.
