More about autism

Autism (also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD or Autism Spectrum Condition, ASC) is a lifelong developmental condition which impacts how a person interacts and communicates, and how they learn and behave. Autism is referred to as a neurodevelopmental condition as symptoms generally appear in the early years of life.

Autism is described as a ‘spectrum’ disorder because there can be significant variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. However, people with autism will typically experience difficulty with communication and interaction with others, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behaviours, which affect their ability to function in education, work or other areas of their life.

People of all genders, races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds can be diagnosed with autism. However, gender differences are often seen in how autism presents. Autism is not an illness or a disease and therefore there is no ‘cure’ for it. However, there are strategies and supports which can reduce some of the difficulties that those with autism experience.
