ADHD is a developmental disorder associated with persistent and pervasive difficulties with inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Symptoms of ADHD can impair functioning across multiple domains, including education/occupation, daily living and relationships.
As ADHD is a developmental disorder, it cannot develop in adults without being present during childhood. However, sometimes ADHD was not recognised when someone was a child, and they are assessed later in life.
The criteria for diagnosis of ADHD specifies there are three different ways ADHD presents itself: predominantly inattentive presentation, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation and combined presentation.
