Autism (also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD or Autism Spectrum Condition, ASC) is a lifelong developmental disorder which impacts how a person interacts and communicates, and how they learn and behave. Autism is referred to as a developmental disorder as symptoms generally appear in the early years of life.
Autism is described as a ‘spectrum’ disorder because there can be significant variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. However, people with autism will typically experience difficulty with communication and interaction with others, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behaviours, which affect their ability to function in education, work or other areas of their life.
A questionnaire pack sent to parents/carers requesting information about your child’s developmental, educational and health history.
An in-depth video call interview informed by the highly validated Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) is completed with parents/carers. This considers your child’s challenges across settings, with detailed individualised examples.
A semi-structured and standardised assessment of communication, social skills, and restricted and repetitive behaviours. This is completed with your child in-clinic.
A clinical observation completed within the school setting. The assessing clinician will plan to observe during both structured and unstructured periods, and to speak to a staff member who knows your child well about their presentation in this setting.
A video call session to share assessment findings and any recommendations made for ongoing input/support. A comprehensive assessment report is then written and shared with you summarising the above.
