More about autism

Autism (also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD or Autism Spectrum Condition, ASC) is a lifelong developmental disorder which impacts how a person interacts and communicates, and how they learn and behave. Autism is referred to as a developmental disorder as symptoms generally appear in the early years of life.

Autism is described as a ‘spectrum’ disorder because there can be significant variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. However, people with autism will typically experience difficulty with communication and interaction with others, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behaviours, which affect their ability to function in education, work or other areas of their life.

Common signs of autism in children and young people can include:

  • Lack of response to the interaction of others
  • Reduced use/avoidance of eye-contact
  • Repetitive use of language
  • Challenges understanding thoughts/feelings of others
  • Difficulties recognising and/or express own thoughts or feelings
  • Challenges in making or maintaining social relationships
  • Difficulties with imagination
  • Challenges with certain sensory stimuli
  • Repetitive movements of the body
  • A dislike of change and need for strict routines
  • Intense interests in particular subjects or activities
