Child ADHD Assessment

A child ADHD assessment with South Wales Psychology costs £1745.

We provide ADHD assessments for children from 6 years old. One of the testing components that we use during ADHD assessments (Qb check) is currently only available for individuals aged 6 to 60 years, therefore we are unable to assess individuals falling outside of this range. Young children also exhibit high energy levels, impulsivity, and short attention spans as part of typical development and may will ‘grow out’ of this as they develop. It is therefore helpful to allow these traits to stabilise before considering a neurodevelopmental difference.

As a service, we aim to operate without a waiting list to ensure all our clients can access assessments in a timely manner. You will be provided with a provisional assessment timeline upon confirming your booking, which should give you an idea of how long the process will take from first appointment to feedback session.

South Wales Psychology currently provide ADHD assessments with clinical recommendations, but we cannot recommend or prescribe medication. If you are given an ADHD diagnosis, you will need to obtain a referral to a psychiatrist for a medication consultation. You can either take your South Wales Psychology report to your GP and ask to be referred via the NHS, or request a private psychiatry appointment. Please be aware that prescription decisions are distinct to our assessment and will be at the discretion of the assessing psychiatrist. Therefore, if medication is your desired outcome, it is advisable to ascertain whether they accept private assessments before booking with assessment with us. We will be happy to liaise with the assessing psychiatrist regarding your assessment if required.

Our assessment pathway is thorough and comprehensive, typically providing the information needed to come to a diagnostic decision. However, sometimes further information from other sources may be needed before an outcome can be provided, for example, about your child’s health or cognitive functioning. In addition, some children may have experienced complex trauma or mental health difficulties which are impacting on their wellbeing and daily functioning. The assessing team may also recommend that they access treatment to address these needs before seeking a neurodevelopmental diagnosis. You will be advised of this at the earliest opportunity and kept informed of this during the assessment process.

The clinical interview part of our assessments is completed via video call. However, all child ADHD assessments will require at least one face-to-face appointment. As a service we believe this is necessary to obtain accurate and reliable information about the difficulties your child is experiencing.

Sometimes, your child may need more urgent mental health support in between sessions. We do not offer an urgent care or out of hours service and advise you to access your GP, out of hours and emergency services if needed.
